The Seattle Seahawks have traded two players and a 2020 third round draft pick for DE Jadeveon Clowney.
One of the players was DE Barkevious Mingo who was not expected to make the Seahawk roster. The other players was Jacob Martin who would have been a backup DE with the Hawks.
Clowney’s salary this year is about $16 million. Mingo’s salary is in the $4 million range. So not bad eh? Seattle rents Clowney for a third round pick, which will likely be a pick in the lower one third of the round and the hit to the team is about $12 million after they shed Mingo’s salary.
But wait! There’s more!
Should Seattle not be able to sign Clowney to a long term contract after the season and Clowney signs elsewhere in next year’s free agency, Seattle will get a compensatory draft pick, possibly as high as a third rounder in next years draft.
Now for the clincher as if one was needed and I’m snickering as I write this, Seattle’s GM John Schneider also got the Texans to pay $7 million of Clowney’s 2019 contract!
