What Senate Republicans Are Saying About Impeachment

Senate Leader McConnell has accused the House Democrats of a “rush to judgement” in their impeachment inquiry into Trump’s abuse of power.  The Senate holds the power to hold hearings for impeachment if the House votes to proceed, and there is no enforcement procedure if McConnell refuses hearings.  Trump loyalists Lindsey Graham, John Kennedy, and Rand Paul have expressed confidence that impeachment articles would be refused in the Senate.

  • Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, told the news outlet, “You can’t tell me they’re talking about impeachment when the president is cooperating with them 100 percent to release these things. It’s premature to talk about impeachment.”
  • Sen. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) told Politico the Democrats’ action was putting them “on a path to re-elect the president.”

Some Republicans have called for a fact check before rushing to judgement, including Mitt Romney, Richard Burr, and Cory Gardner.
