Senate Republicans discuss a lengthy impeachment trial in part to derail Democratic primaries

Senate Republicans have some shenanigans up their sleeves

Republicans have discussed holding “a lengthy impeachment trial beginning in January to scramble the Democratic presidential race — potentially keeping six contenders in Washington until the eve of the Iowa caucuses or longer.’

Senators Bennet, Booker, Harris, Klobuchar, Sanders, Warren would like a few more days of campaigning before the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire’s primary but a lengthy impeachment trial might derail their plans.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) said he would like for the Senate do things right and anticipates the trial would last 5-6 weeks. With six senators attending an impeachment trial, Cornyn thinks candidates Pete Buttigieg and Joe Biden might benefit from them off the campaign trail just right before the primaries begin.
