Word of the Day: Wollemi—an Australian aboriginal word meaning “watch out, look around you”. Why Wollemi, you may ask? Because by some miracle, the Wollemi Pines, the oldest tree species (it’s been around 65 million years) was saved by firefighters in Australia from being incinerated.
This tree has outlived dinosaurs, tectonic shifts, exploding planets, droughts and floods. It was declared extinct until by some miracle, this small copse of the Wollemi Pines were discovered in 1994. Only 200 remain in their natural habitat, The Australian National Forest, and though Australia is still burning, the Wollemi Pines remain. This is the metaphor for today, Friday, January 17, 2020….
