DATELINE HACKENSACK, NJ

Shortly after midnight this morning, the man — who police did not identify — had placed his Smith and Wesson .45 caliber handgun on his nightstand as he was preparing for bed in his Hudson Street residence when the pistol discharged accidentally. The bullet struck him in the abdomen injuring his internal organs. Police say he owned the handgun legally.

Multiple police officers arrived to the home after the victim’s wife phoned 9/11. Police Officer Brett McCarthy rendered medical aid until the ambulance and paramedics arrived along with members of the Hackensack Fire Department. The incident is undergoing investigation. There was no indication of foul play, police said.

He remains in critical condition.
