DNC Chairman Tom Perez made a statement Tuesday that urges states not to cancel their primaries due to the Coronavirus outbreak, but to begin mailing ballots to all registered voters, and to implement “no-excuse absentee voting” which allows voters to drop their ballots off at pre-approved sites. He also suggested expanding hours and days of service to reduce crowd size at voting sites.
Perez stated that postponing primaries may jeopardize the elections as the outbreak continues its unpredictability in the future.
“The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy, and we must do everything we can to protect and expand that right instead of bringing our democratic process to a halt,” he added.
Primary elections in Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana and Puerto Rico have all been pushed back from their originally scheduled dates.
