Michael Reinoehl, 48, who was accused of carrying a loaded gun at an earlier downtown Portland protest, is under investigation in the fatal shooting Saturday night of right-wing demonstrator Aaron Danielson (aka Jay Bishop) who was part of a pro-Trump caravan of counter protestors.
Michael Forest Reinoehl calls himself an anti-fascist and has posted videos and photos of demonstrations he attended since late June, accompanied by the hashtags #blacklivesmatter, #anewnation and #breonnataylor.
Sources familiar with the case but not authorized to speak said police are investigating Reinoehl. A family member also identified him as a man captured in photos and video seen leaving the shooting scene shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday.
Aaron Danielson, a supporter of the conservative group Patriot Prayer, was shot in the chest and died in the street. It was soon after most cars in a caravan of supporters of President Donald Trump had left the city’s downtown streets.
There’s a lot of confusion about the victim’s name. One video shows a person rushing up to Danielson, referring to him as “Jay.” A lot of confusion erupted on social media over the different names; however, he’s referred to as Aaron “Jay” Danielson in an approved GoFundMe and as Jay by a friend in a graphic video at the scene. Some on social media claimed he used a pseudonym to protect himself from Antifa, although that was not confirmed.
Confusing matters, people are sharing the criminal history of a different Jay Bishop who isn’t the man who died. An apparently fake GoFundMe account in Jay Bishop’s name was taken down, confusing people more. Although it’s clear he did go by the name Jay at times, it’s not clear whether he ever used Bishop.
