DeVos Says Ruling on Private School Funding No Longer Effective

After a federal judge in Washington D.C. last week ruled that distributing CARES Act funding to private schools was illegal, it appears the Secretary of Education has quietly given up.

The Education Department did not announce the decision to drop the rule, but put in an update on its CARES Act funding page that following the ruling the rule “is no longer in effect.”

A Trump-appointed U.S. District Judge ruled DeVos violated the law by changing the formula established by Congress to distribute CARES Act funds to public and private schools.

DeVos has scheduled a visit on Monday to a Grand Rapids Catholic school with the intent to discuss how the school will open safely during the pandemic, and also to highlight “the important role Catholic schools play in providing students options for their education.”
