COVID-19 updates: 10-23-20

Back in March, News Views published detailed, daily updates on the Coronavirus/COVID-19. Beginning today, we’re going back to the original format we originally adopted.

I want to thank Ronald McDonnel for his Community Submissions on this topic but since the virus has spiked again and we have not ’rounded the corner’ nor will it go away, the publishers at News Views have decided to resume posting COVID-19 updates.

Some stats we cannot ignore:

  • As of 10-22-20, the US reported 828 new coronavirus deaths and 75,064 new cases.
  • Globally, there are 41,570,883 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 1,134,940 deaths as of 10-23-20.
  • 8,675,199 people in the US have tested positive for the virus and 228,577 have died from it. We’re not learning to live with it.
  • The Midwest and the Rocky Mountains struggle to control major outbreaks.
  • Officials in Kentucky announced more than 1,470 cases on Thursday, the biggest one-day jump in that state.
  • More than 1,300 cases were recorded in Colorado, setting another single-day record.
  • Chicago has averaged 645 new cases a day this week, a nighttime curfew will be imposed on businesses starting on Friday.
  • Wisconsin has opened a field hospital to treat Coronavirus patients.
  • North Dakota now has the most cases per capita in the country.
  • Ohio reported a new record for single-day coronavirus cases on Thursday, reporting 2,425 new cases. That single day case number broke the previous record held just the day before.
  • In a ‘can’t make up this pandemic moron moment,’ members of a regional health department board in Idaho voted Thursday to repeal a local mask mandate just moments after hearing a hospital was overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients and looking at sending people as far away as Seattle for care.

Facts First: Trump’s claim is false. The CDC study, which was released in September, did not say that 85% of all people who wear masks get infected with the coronavirus. In fact, it did not even attempt to figure out what percentage of people who wear a mask get infected with the coronavirus.
