Colorado Springs Mass Shooting Only One of Nine in the U.S. Over The Weekend

A gunman opened fire at a birthday party in Colorado Springs early Sunday morning and seven people died in the incident. Police responded at approximately 12:20a.m. and found six people dead, while the seventh was injured and later died at the hospital. The suspect appeared to be a boyfriend of one of the victims, and also died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

The tragedy was one of at least nine mass shootings in the U.S. over the weekend in which 15 people died and another 30 were injured.

Other incidents across seven states included:

  • Phoenix — one dead and seven wounded, all between the ages of 18 and 22, at a Hyatt Regency, with more than one shooter
  • Woodlawn, Maryland — an active shooter was shot by police in a suburban townhome community after igniting his home on fire, shooting and stabbing his next door neighbors, and shooting two more neighbors. One victim died as well as the shooter.
  • California suffered three separate shootings. In Los Angeles, one died and five were injured on Sunday night; in Citrus Heights four people were shot outside of a nightclub on Saturday; and in Compton, police responded to shots fired and found two men dead, ages 15-20, and later alerted to two other injured people seeking treatment from gunshot sounds at hospitals.
  • Newark — two men and two women suffered gunshot wounds, police are seeking more information.
  • Milwaukee — four people injured, ages 23 to 45, with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Two men arrested in connection.
  • St. Louis County, Missouri — two dead and three more injured in a park after gunfire broke out from a truck that pulled up and started shooting.
