McConnell “Respectfully” Tells Biden It’s Time For Democrats to Raise the Debt Ceiling

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is telling President Biden to lean on Pelosi and Schumer to get the debt ceiling raised without GOP votes. Congress has until October 18, according to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, to raise the debt ceiling or risk an historic default.

“Republicans’ position is simple. We have no list of demands. For two and a half months, we have simply warned that since your party wishes to govern alone, it must handle the debt limit alone as well,” McConnell said.

Speaking to reporters following a speech on the standoff, Biden said he could not guarantee that the country would be able to pay its bills if the GOP obstructs.

“I cannot believe that will be the end result because the consequences are so dire,” Biden said. “But can I guarantee it? If I could, I would. But I can’t.”
