New CDC report shows vaccines offer more protection than ‘natural immunities’ against COVID-19

According to a new report the CDC released on Friday, unvaccinated people who had previously contracted COVID-19 virus were more than five times more likely to be reinfected again compared to those who were fully vaccinated with the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, according to a new study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study clearly debunks right-wing misinformation that claims previously infected people build up some magical amount of natural immunities towards the virus, which somehow prevents them from contracting it again. The authors’ findings showed “vaccine-induced immunity was more protective than infection-induced immunity” among patients who had their first bout of the disease or were vaccinated three to six months earlier.

In fact, the study confirms the adjusted odds of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 among unvaccinated adults with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection were 5.49-fold higher than the odds among fully vaccinated recipients of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine who had no previous documented infection (95% confidence interval = 2.75–10.99).

It appears that right wing purveyors of COVID-19 misinformation have received their claims on natural immunity from a non-peer reviewed study out of Israel. This particular, non-peer reviewed study suggested “Israelis with ‘natural immunity”‘from a previous case of the virus appeared to have ‘longer lasting and stronger protection’ against a reinfection.” The new CDC report states otherwise.

CDC did not include adults who received Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine, who are currently recommended to receive a booster shot at least two months after they were first vaccinated.
