New York City’s former mayor Rudy Giuliani was in a courtroom in Manhattan on Tuesday to discuss his continuing failure to give up assets to Georgia election workers he defamed, and it did not go well for him.
Rudy’s day in court started with Judge Lewis Liman allowing his lawyers to withdraw from the case, citing “professional ethics” concerns. They had requested to be removed two weeks ago.
“I’m sorry it came to this,” Kenneth Caruso, one of the lawyers stated before they left the courtroom and the former mayor. Caruso on Tuesday had said that there had been “a difference of opinion” with Giuliani but they wished his new counsel “every success.”
Enter Rudy’s new lawyer, Joseph M. Cammarata, a former police officer who befriended Rudy following the September 11 attacks when Cammarata’s brother, a firefighter, died.
- Cammarata is representing Rudy in the trial, scheduled for January 16, that will determine whether he can keep his Florida condo and several custom Yankees World Series rings.
- Cammarata was asking for a delay in the Manhattan case because he had to prepare for a Washington D.C. case in December to defend Rudy for continuing to make false accusations about Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss. Rudy could be found in contempt of court in Washington.
- Also, Rudy wants to attend the January 20 inauguration of the man who led him to his demise. According to the NY Post, Cammarata claimed that Rudy has an “involvement” with the inauguration, and that he “regularly consults” with Trump.
- Judge Liman’s answer to a delay of trial in Manhattan was no, explaining that “the defendant’s social calendar does not constitute good cause” to grant the delay. But he said that he’d be open to moving the trial up to Jan. 13 or Jan. 14 so that it can finish up in time for Giuliani to theoretically attend the event.
Rudy slumped in his chair with his arms crossed, as the judge excoriated him for the scant number of items he has turned over to the election workers as he was ordered to — which include some luxury watches and the Lauren Bacall Mercedes convertible, without the title.
“The car without the keys and title is meaningless,” the judge told Cammarata. “Your client is a competent person,” he added, noting Rudy was a former U.S. attorney.
“I have applied for the title,” Rudy said of the Mercedes. “I haven’t gotten it yet. What am I supposed to do, make it up myself? I don’t have a car,” he said in a raised voice. “I don’t have a credit card. I don’t have cash.” He complained that he didn’t “have a penny” that was not tied up by the Georgia women he defamed.
Judge Liman warned him to let his lawyer do the talking, and Rudy shot back, “Somebody has to tell the truth!”
Judge Liman addressed Cammarata, “Next time, he’s not going to be permitted to speak. And the court will have to take action.”
Upon leaving the courthouse, Giuliani ranted to the press, and for good measure blathered something-something about Hunter Biden.
As he headed for his waiting car, a heckler shouted at him, “You got nothing now! You’re a bum!”
