GA’s Appeals Court Dismisses DA Fani Willis from Case that Charged The Fascist Guy with Election Interference

The Georgia Court of Appeals ruled on Thursday that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her office should be disqualified from the 2020 election interference case, a bombshell decision that upends the last remaining criminal case against incoming President Donald Trump.

In a 2-1 opinion, a panel of judges, all GOP appointees, concluded that Willis’ onetime romantic relationship with former special prosecutor Nathan Wade constituted a conflict of interest that merited her dismissal from the case.

Specifically, Georgia has a non-partisan agency, called the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council. The director, Pete Skandalakis, will decide how to proceed. He can appoint a different district attorney or a special prosecutor to take over…or he could decline to move forward with the case altogether.

Trump’s team and the DA’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The court did not go so far as to completely dismiss the case, and Georgia law allows for the case to be assigned to a different county prosecutor in the state. But legal experts have said that is likely to be a difficult task given the complicated, political and novel nature of the case brought by Willis.

Notably, the Court of Appeals declined to toss out the indictment entirely, meaning that another prosecutor could in theory take over the case. But the court says that Willis must be disqualified because there’s an appearance of impropriety related to her romantic relationship w/ Nathan Wade.
