Senate confirms Dog Killer Kristi Noem as Trump’s Secretary of Homeland Security

The Senate confirmed South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem on Saturday to serve as the Secretary of Homeland Security, putting her in charge of executing one of President Trump’s biggest priorities in his second term: cracking down on immigration.

Noem, a Republican, won confirmation in a 59-34 vote. She becomes the fourth person confirmed in Trump’s cabinet, following Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Pete Hegseth, who was narrowly appointed Secretary of Defense on Friday night after Vice President J.D. Vance cast a tie-breaking vote.

Some companies are refusing to comply with Trump’s anti-DEI crusade

The president and his followers have falsely portrayed diversity, equity and inclusion programs as illegal and discriminatory against straight white men, in particular. And he gave his bigoted threats some teeth this week when he ordered his attorney general to compile a report with “recommendations for enforcing Federal civil-rights laws and taking other appropriate measures to encourage the private sector to end illegal discrimination and preferences, including DEI.”

Multiple companies — including McDonald’s and Walmart — already had acquiesced and shut down their diversity initiatives, and Target joined the list Friday. But it appears some other large companies are — at least for now — pushing back against this right-wing crusade and refusing to abandon their official commitments to diversity in the workplace.

Costco is receiving some online praise, for example, after more than 98% of shareholders recently rejected a shareholder proposal for a report on any risks posed by the company’s DEI policies. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon have faced similar activist proposals at their companies, but speaking at this week’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, both said they remain committed to seeking out diverse talent despite the right-wing crusade. Asked in a CNBC interview about the anti-DEI push among investors, Dimon said: “Bring them on.”

State News:

A state legislative committee has advanced a resolution asking that the power to regulate marriage be returned to the states.

Since 1793, when the U.S. Supreme Court declined a request by President George Washington to offer legal guidance on foreign relations, the court’s justices have steered away from weighing in outside the context of a formal lawsuit.

That has not deterred lawmakers in Idaho, however. This week, a State House committee overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling on the Supreme Court to undo Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark 2015 decision that gave same-sex couples the right to marry, and to hand the power to regulate marriage back to the states.

The resolution would still need approval by the full House and the Idaho Senate before any request could be sent to the Supreme Court. Both chambers in Idaho are controlled by Republicans.

“Since court rulings are not laws and only legislatures elected by the people may pass laws, Obergefell is an illegitimate overreach,” the resolution reads. It continues: “The Idaho Legislature calls upon the Supreme Court of the United States to reverse Obergefell and restore the natural definition of marriage, a union of one man and one woman.’’
