‘Gravely concerning’: 5 ex-Treasury secretaries unite to issue ‘extraordinary’ warning

In an extremely unusual move, five former Treasury Secretaries wrote a warning letter to the nation Monday sounding alarm over moves made by President Donald Trump.

Robert E. Rubin, Lawrence H. Summers, Timothy F. Geithner, Jacob J. Lew and Janet L. Yellen — all of whom served in Democratic administrations — put their names to an article published in the New York Times.

In it, they voiced fears that actions taken in the past few days could be devastating for the democracy.

Federal Judge Temporarily Blocks Transfer Of Migrants To Guantanamo Bay Over Lack Of Process Concerns

There is significant uncertainty regarding what happens to migrants who are sent to Guantanamo Bay for processing.

Overnight, a federal judge in New Mexico temporarily blocked an attempt by the federal government to deport three Venezuelan migrants to Guantanamo Bay over concerns that there is significant uncertainty over the lack of legal process for migrants who are taken to the facility.

President Donald Trump said explicitly in an interview this weekend that Palestinians would not have a right to return to Gaza under his plan to take US ownership of the strip and rebuild it.

“No, they wouldn’t,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News when asked whether the Palestinians would have a right to return. “Because they will have much better housing. Much better – in other words, I’m talking about building a permanent place for them.”

New CFPB chief closes headquarters, tells all staff they must not do ‘any work tasks’

Staff and contractors at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau have been told they cannot “perform any work tasks,” according to an internal email obtained by NPR on Monday.

The new directive from CFPB’s acting director Russell Vought on Monday comes after the agency closed the bureau’s Washington headquarters for the week and told staff to work remotely. No reason was given for the building’s closure.

“Employees should not come into the office. Please do not perform any work tasks,” Vought said in an email to CFPB staff on Monday.

Former Trump advisor Bannon to plead guilty in border wall fraud case, avoid jail, Law360 reports

WASHINGTON, Feb 10 (Reuters) – Former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon plans to plead guilty in a deal with New York state prosecutors to resolve fraud charges connected to fundraising for a U.S. southern border wall and allow him to avoid any prison time, legal trade publication Law360 reported.

The report cited a defense attorney for Bannon, John F. Carman. “It is anticipated that Mr. Bannon will plead guilty tomorrow under an agreement with the district attorney and the court that he will not receive a sentence that includes any jail time,” Carman was quoted as saying.
