Tulsi Gabbard confirmed by Senate as Trump’s national intelligence director
The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Tulsi Gabbard to serve as director of national intelligence, adding the previously Democratic former Hawaii legislator to President Donald Trump’s inner circle after lawmakers raised pointed questions about her views on Russia, ousted Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked classified information.
Gabbard secured confirmation on a 52-48 vote. In her new role, Gabbard will oversee the 18 agencies within the U.S. Intelligence community, serving as the president’s top adviser on intelligence matters.
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, the only Republican to vote against Tulsi Gabbard.
In a statement, McConnell of Kentucky said: “The nation should not have to worry that the intelligence assessments the President receives are tainted by a Director of National Intelligence with a history of alarming lapses in judgment.
“Edward Snowden’s treasonous betrayal of the United States and its most sensitive lawful intelligence activities endangered sources, methods, and lives. Japan is among America’s closest treaty allies in the Indo-Pacific, and the risk of conflict in the region is the product of Chinese aggression, not western ‘threat inflation’. Russia’s escalation of its unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine threatens American interests and is solely the responsibility of Vladimir Putin.
“Entrusting the coordination of the intelligence community to someone who struggles to acknowledge these facts is an unnecessary risk. So is empowering a DNI who only acknowledged the value of critical intelligence collection authorities when her nomination appeared to be in jeopardy.
“Beginning today, the brave men and women of America’s intelligence community will turn to Director Gabbard for principled leadership and sounder judgment in the service of America’s interests and national security. I join all of them in hoping that she rises to the immense responsibilities of her office.”

Inflation heats up, adding pressure on Trump over vow to lower prices
A growing chorus of economists say the risks of a broader slowdown are rising.
Price growth sped up unexpectedly in January, posing an early challenge to President Donald Trump’s economic agenda.
Inflation for so-called core items, which exclude volatile food and energy prices, climbed 3.3% over the past 12 months, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday, above economists’ expectations of 3.2%. On a monthly basis, the inflation measure rose 0.4%, exceeding forecasts for 0.3%.

USAID IG fired day after report critical of impacts of Trump administration’s dismantling of the agency
The inspector general of the US Agency for International Development was fired on Tuesday, a day after his office released a report critical of the Trump administration’s efforts to dismantle the agency, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.
