Trans pilot falsely blamed in D.C. plane crash sues conservative influencer
Military pilot Jo Ellis said she had to hire private armed security for her family because of the false claims, which went viral on social media.
A transgender military pilot filed a defamation lawsuit Wednesday against a conservative influencer who falsely claimed on social media that she was flying the helicopter that collided with a commercial jet near Reagan National Airport in January, killing 67 people.
“I want to hold this person accountable for what they did to me,” Jo Ellis, a pilot who has served more than 15 years in the Virginia Army National Guard, said in a statement to NBC News. “It’s become too common that people can say horrible things about someone, profit at their expense, and get away with it.”

Dow falls 1,000 points as market sells off after historic rally: Live updates
Stocks fell Thursday, giving back much of the gains from the historic rally seen in the previous session after President Donald Trump announced a 90-day reprieve on some of his “reciprocal” tariffs. Investors worried that even with the short pause on some of the duties, economic activity will be slowed by Trump’s singling out of China with a much higher rate.
The major averages pared some of their losses earlier Thursday. The S&P 500 sold off 3.6%, while the Nasdaq Composite slid 4.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,049 points, or 2.7%.
Leading the declines were Apple and Tesla, which pulled back more than 3% and 5%, respectively. Nvidia lost nearly 5%, while Meta Platforms slipped around 6%.
