20 horses, ready to race….
What do we make of the 151st Kentucky Derby? There is an element of luck or fate or the mystical or a certain blood alcohol level to the Kentucky Derby….. it’s a known near-fact. . . .So parsing the meaning of yesterday’s Run for the Roses is proving to be a challenge.
The Winner? Sovereignty out raced Journalism. Sounds like the same epic battle the United States is engaged in, except we’re working toward a different result. We would prefer not to have a Sovereign
$leading the field; instead we favor a free press or Journalism lead the way. Is the Derby sending us a sign?
Mr. Algorithm Steve Kornacki at the big board, because luck? “WE DON’t NEED NO STINKING LUCK…..” 😄
tThe winning jockey was a Venezuelan named Junior Alvarado. “
Alvarado spoke with NBC immediately after the race. Here’s what he had to say. “It means the world to me. My family is here. Iowa thought I had a great chance. Mr. Mott was so confident all week. If I had to pick someone, it was Mr. Mott. We’ve been a team for a while. It’s more than a dream come true to have done it with him and the Godolphin people who have been very helpful throughout my career too.”
Junior Alvarado didn’t just win one of the most coveted horse races in the world, he’s also bringing the home $3.1 million. According to the Kentucky Derby, a total of $5 million was doled out among winners today, with the winner of the big race taking the largest chunk by far.

Sovereignty and Alvarado , owner Bill Mott, Odds 9-1
Don’t forget the hats. . . .. My top place goes to Olympian Simone Biles, elegant…….

The booze. . . .The Julep and a new favorite, the Spire

Mint Julep (Bourbon, simple syrup, mint leaves)

The Spire (Bourbon Whiskey, lemonade, cranberry juice, Lemon slice (for garnish)
The moral of this drink story? It takes multiple additives for bourbon to taste good. 😊
