Former Supreme Court Justice David Souter dies at 85
Former Justice David Souter, who appointed to the Supreme Court by President George H. W. Bush in 1990 but surprised Republicans by joining the court’s more liberal wing, has died his home in New Hampshire, the court announced Friday. He was 85.
“Justice David Souter served our Court with great distinction for nearly twenty years,” Chief Justice John Roberts said in the statement from the court. “He brought uncommon wisdom and kindness to a lifetime of public service.”
At the time of his retirement from the court, Souter was 69 and nowhere near the oldest member of the court. But he had made clear to friends at the time that he wanted to leave Washington, a city he never liked, and return to his native New Hampshire.

‘Harrowing’: Video shows Worcester police hold girl’s face on ground during ICE operation
Worcester police and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were seen on video detaining a mother and her teenage daughter, whose face was slammed into the ground, Thursday in the Massachusetts city.
Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra captured video of the chaotic scene on Eureka Terrace. It shows a large crowd forming around the agents and officers as community members shout, “You’re not supposed to work with ICE!”
One person, whom neighbors said was a 16-year-old girl, momentarily escaped from Worcester police officers, who are then seen chasing and restraining her on the ground as she screams desperately.
“The series of events was no doubt disturbing and the footage of a family being separated is harrowing,” City Manager Eric Batista said in a statement. “Worcester police were dispatched to the scene after several emergency calls for assistance. Unfortunately, two individuals were arrested after several attempts by WPD officers to deescalate the chaotic situation, which included the endangerment of an infant.”
They’re white so it’s alright: First Afrikaners granted refugee status due to arrive in U.S.
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The U.S. government has officially granted 54 Afrikaans South Africans, white descendants of mainly Dutch colonizers, refugee status and they are expected to land in the U.S. on Monday May 12, three sources with knowledge of the matter have told NPR. The sources did not want to be named because they work for the U.S. government and fear for their careers.
U.S. authorities on Thursday were trying to arrange a charter flight that would bring the South Africans to Dulles Airport near Washington, D.C., on Monday morning, but it’s not clear if they will be allowed to land there. If that is not possible then they will be sent on commercial flights, according to the sources.

White House Considers Suspending Writ of Habeas Corpus
This is extremely serious.
We have breaking news tonight that demands your immediate attention—not just as a citizen, but as someone who believes in the basic architecture of a free society.
Stephen Miller—the White House Deputy Chief of Staff and ideological architect of some of the most extreme immigration and authoritarian policies of the last administration—has publicly stated that they are “actively looking at” suspending the writ of habeas corpus. Let me be clear: this is not a throwaway line. This is not political theater. This is a direct signal of intent to upend a core constitutional safeguard.
