We Remember.
Memorial Day 2025 is not like any other Memorial Day. In the past, we’ve remembered those who’ve died while serving in the military. We have used words, emotional and lofty, like freedom, like sacrifice, like love.
We’ve had gatherings of family and friends, we’ve had reunions of this or that battalion, we’ve stood encircling weathered gravestones in small town graveyards, or stark white crosses, seas of them, row on row, or whitest of white gravestones, planted in green, never to grow.
We’ve sang songs, the corny, the spiritual, the personal, the national, along with the military song from every branch, we know them all.
Memorial Day. It’s familiar. It’s Federal. It’s Fighting For. It’s Democracy, it’s Stars and Stripes, it’s the Declaration of Independence. It’s Freedom guided by a document, The Constitution.
May 26, 2025, Memorial Day, though not like those we’ve come to know. This terrain is not familiar, and the Federal Government is in shambles. Rather than fighting FOR we more often fight BACK. This day we can only say our fighters fought not for a democracy but now, for an autocracy. And Stars and Stripes? No, Stars and Bars. Declaration of Independence? Actually Truth Social Posts. And Freedom? The Constitution as the guiding star, our North Star? This Memorial Day, commemorating those who are gone, it’ Freedom, no, instead our emphasis is on being careful in word and deed just in case; and Constitution, again and again no, . . . instead the Executive Order, the Silent Legislature, the Complicit Judiciary.
