Salmonella outbreak expands to 18 states as cucumbers and tomatoes and many prepared foods are recalled

So much for MAHA and the gutting of the FDA, CDC and the study of Food Science.

According to the CDC: “CDC and public health officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to whole cucumbers. Since the last update on May 23, 2025, FDA testing identified the outbreak strain, as well as additional Salmonellastrains, in cucumbers. The recalled cucumbers should no longer be for sale.” Tomatoes are now on the list as well as a number of prepared foods.

Nearly four dozen people in 18 states have been sickened in an expanding outbreak of salmonella food poisoning tied to recalled cucumbers sent to restaurants, hospitals, cruise ships and grocery stores, including Target stores, federal health officials said. cnn.it/4mFVRzE

USA Today reports: “Health officials have now increased the number of illnesses reported to 45 in 18 states – Georgia, Indiana and Massachusetts are the latest states with cases – with hospitalizations due to salmonella poisoning up from nine to 16, according to the FDA and CDC.

The FDA notes the symptoms of Salmonella, “Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating food that is contaminated with Salmonella, and the symptoms usually last four to seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Children younger than five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections.

The initial voluntary recall involved cucumbers sold directly to consumers at Bednar’s Farm Fresh Market. Subsequently, additional recalls have been announced by grocers such as Harris Teeter, Kroger and Walmart that repackaged whole cucumbers for sale or used them in ready-to-eat products such as vegetable trays and salads.” Target has now added a list of recalled foods, cucumbers and Dinty Moore beef stew, for example.

The FDA has updated an ongoing recall of tomatoes distributed in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina to its most severe warning, saying there is a higher probability that potential salmonella contamination could lead to “serious adverse health consequences or death.”
