Vandals hit Plymouth Rock and other landmarks in town overnight. The vandalism comes as Plymouth prepares to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims arriving on the Mayflower.
Crews had the famous rock cleaned up late Monday morning. Photos shared on social media showed red spray paint covering the rock and the “1620” inscription.
Peter Sullivan, a resident of Plymouth, discovered the graffiti on Plymouth Rock while walking around the Pilgrim Memorial State Park.
He said the graffiti was everywhere.
“They vandalized everything. All the statues, monuments. These people went around town all night and did all kinds of damage,” Sullivan told CNN. He noted it’s not the first time.
The opening ceremony for the Plymouth 400 celebration is scheduled for late April.
