JAMA’s new findings on COVID-19; fever not a symptom

The Journal of American Medicine (JAMA) just released a released a paper detailing new findings on COVID-19 and what we now know about New York State’s largest health system.

According to The Washington Post:

  • Researchers found that 20 percent of all those hospitalized died.
  • Researchers looked at the electronic medical records of 5,700 patients infected with covid-19 between Mar. 1 and Apr. 4.
  • They focused on Northwell Health’s 12 hospitals located in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County — all epicenters of the outbreak.
  • 60% male, 40% female.
  • The average age was 63.
  • Those that died:
    • 57% had hypertension.
    • 41% obese.
    • 34% had diabetes.
  • All consistent with CDC stats.
  • BUT: Studies indicate that asthma does not play a dominant role in outcomes of the disease.
  • AND: 70% of the patients sick enough to be admitted to the hospital did not have a fever.
    • CDC lists fever as the number one symptom.
    • Many testing centers for the virus turned away patients if they did not a fever.
