Violence erupts in D.C.; Trump encourages police brutality

At least 20 people were arrested in Washington D.C., including four whose allegiances remain unknown on gun charges. The chaos also left two officers injured when Trump supporters and counter protesters clashed Saturday night.

Trump took to Twitter and urged the police not to “hold back” in cracking down on “antifa scum.”

When darkness fell, the counterprotesters triggered more mayhem as they harassed Trump’s advocates, stealing red hats and flags and lighting them on fire. Scuffles continued into the night as the provocateurs overturned the tables of vendors who had been selling pro-Trump gear and set off dozens of fireworks, prompting police to pepper-spray them.

The Washington Post:

The Proud Boys, a violent extremist group, clashed at various times with counterprotesters, witnesses reported.

In one videotaped scene, a large number of men in what appeared to be typical clothing worn by the Proud Boys battled with counterprotesters and chanted:  “Fuck antifa.”
