Liveblog - In case you missed it: Headlines 02/16/21

Biden Administration:

Congress:

  • Adam Kinzinger, the six-term Illinois has some really shitty relatives:
    • “Oh my, what a disappointment you are to us and to God!” they wrote. “You have embarrassed the Kinzinger family name!”
    • The author of the letter was Karen Otto, Mr. Kinzinger’s cousin, who paid $7 to send it by certified mail to Mr. Kinzinger’s father — to make sure the congressman would see it, which he did.
  • GOP Sen. Mitt Romney to propose minimum wage hike coupled with immigration enforcement.

COVID-19 Updates:

  • COVID cases, deaths and hospitalizations in the U.S. have plummeted in recent weeks. However, experts have told Newsweek it may be too soon to view the pandemic as in retreat, particularly as the threat of new variants looms and people may grow complacent amid the biggest vaccine roll-out in the country’s history.
  • Doctors and nurses trying to build confidence in Covid-19 vaccines on social media are mounting coordinated campaigns to combat anti-vaccination forces prevalent on those platforms.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning people to hold off on taking Tylenol or Motrin (NSAIDs) before getting a COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Trump 2.0: Because of his science denying, lack of COVID-19 response, Gov. Rick DeSantis (Idiot-FL) is now the darling of the GOP.

White ISIS/MAGAts/Karens:

  • Amy Cooper, the White woman who made national headlines when she reported that a Black birdwatcher in Central Park last year was threatening her and her dog has seen her criminal charges dismissed after completing a counseling program, prosecutors said Tuesday.
  • Senator Ron Johnson (Idiot-Wisconsin) makes another idiotic comment:
  • Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on Monday argued that it’s wrong to describe the group as “armed” and accused Democrats of “selectively” editing videos to exaggerate the threat posed by a mob that came within feet of Vice President Mike Pence and other elected officials.
  • “This didn’t seem like an armed insurrection to me,” Johnson said on WISN. “When you hear the word ‘armed,’ don’t you think of firearms? Here’s the questions I would have liked to ask: How many firearms were confiscated? How many shots were fired?”
  • Law enforcement in Washington D.C. said they are monitoring the potential threat of further violence as followers of the QAnon conspiracy theory eagerly await March 4.
  • Supporters of the radical movement, listed as an domestic terrorist threat by the FBI, believe that Donald Trump will once again be inaugurated as president next month.
  • Oh, my! ‘Cancel Culture!’
  • A Republican California state senator on Tuesday introduced legislation that would make political affiliation a protected class under California’s anti-discrimination laws, billing it as a way to fight “cancel culture.”
    • “It is unfathomable to me that corporations and members of the public would ruin a person’s career, business and family because of their political ideology,” said Melendez.  “A free society shouldn’t allow thoughts and ideas to be censored. Free speech covers all speech, not just that with which you agree.”
    • “Cancel culture and the efforts to silence differing opinions and voices should be a growing concern for all of us,” said Melendez. “A climate of intolerance has been established and has stifled healthy and normal debate. Anyone who values their own freedom of speech should be concerned. This cannot and should not be allowed to continue.”
  • He’s baaaaack:
  • In nearly half of the more than 200 federal cases stemming from the attack on the Capitol, authorities have cited evidence that an insurrectionist appeared to be inspired by conspiracy theories or extremist ideologies, according to an Associated Press review of court records.

Other headlines:

  • Because owning 27 McDonald’s is really, bigly news: Well, it is when the owner of these McDonald’s is a former, MLB player and the first black person to own this many Mikey D’s. Now, Herb Washington filed suit against the fast food giant alleging “systemic racial discrimination for its pattern of steering Black owners into restaurants in impoverished neighborhoods that yielded less profit, targeting them with unequal assessments that made it harder to renew their contracts, then pressuring them to sell to White owners.”
  • A rocket attack on U.S.-led forces in northern Iraq killed a civilian contractor on Monday and injured a U.S. service member, the U.S. coalition in Iraq said, in the deadliest such attack in almost a year.
  • The Texas winter storm may drive up gasoline prices across the country.
  • Madison Square Garden to welcome fans back for Knicks, Rangers games.
