COVID-19 Updates and COVIDIOTS:

  • As COVID-19 vaccinations continue to ramp up across California, the state is deploying a work-for-a-shot program for volunteers.
  • The governor’s office in conjunction with California Volunteers on Monday launched MyTurnVolunteer, a portal where people can sign up to work volunteer shifts at vaccination sites, based on their ZIP code, and in turn become eligible for a shot.

  • Wyoming is dropping its mask mandate, making it the 17th state that won’t require its residents to wear face coverings in public.
  • In recent weeks, the governors of five U.S. states—Texas, Mississippi, Iowa, Montana and North Dakota—have announced the end of statewide requirements making people wear masks that cover their nose and mouth to limit the spread of COVID.
  • Eleven states never required masks: Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Tennessee.

  • Respect my authority! Kentucky state lawmakers have advanced a bill that would make it a crime to insult or taunt a law enforcement officer in a way that could provoke a violent response.
  • Under the bill, a person who “accosts, insults, taunts, or challenges a law enforcement officer with offensive or derisive words, or by gestures or other physical contact, that would have a direct tendency to provoke a violent response” in a public place would be guilty of disorderly conduct in the second degree. The offense would be classified as a Class B misdemeanorpunishable by up to 90 days in jail and fines of up to $250.
  • The Walt Disney Company pulled “Dumbo,” “Peter Pan,” “The Aristocats” and “Swiss Family Robinson” from its offerings for children under 7.
  • Piers Morgan, who prompted backlash and an investigation from the UK’s media regulator over comments about Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, will depart “Good Morning Britain,” ITV abruptly announced Tuesday.
  • The children of Daniel Prude are suing the city of Rochester, N.Y. and at least six police officers in federal court, alleging civil rights violations, gross negligence and wrongful death. The 41-year-old Black man died of asphyxiation last March after being restrained by police while he was in the midst of a mental health crisis.
