Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) said the truth out loud on the Senate floor on Tuesday, when he described Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson’s remarks about BLM as racist.
“I get that no one likes to be called racist, but sometimes there’s just no other way to describe the use of bigoted tropes that for generations threatened Black lives by stoking white fear of African Americans — and Black men in particular,” Menendez said.
Johnson had made the statement about the Capitol riots that he wasn’t concerned about the mob being pro-Trump, but that he “might have been a little concerned” if Trump had won the election and “those were tens of thousands of Black Lives Matter and Antifa protesters.”
Johnson had to defend those statements later and said, “There was nothing racial about my comments, nothing whatsoever.”
He added: “This isn’t about race. It’s about riots.”
