The Senate on Tuesday passed a measure that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent across the United States.
The Bill’s sponsor, Marco Rubio (R) of Florida has sponsored similar legislation every year since 2018, when Florida passed year-round daylight saving time but could not implement it without the support of federal legislation. This is the first year the concept has caught traction in the Senate.
The Sunshine Protection Act passed the chamber by unanimous consent. The bill would still need to pass the House and be signed by President Joe Biden to become law. If the measure clears Congress and is signed into law, it would mean no more falling back every year in the fall, starting in November 2023.
Daylight saving time was invented by former slave owner Ben Franklin.
