At Miami’s Freedom Tower, Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that designates November 7 as “Victims of Communism Day.”
A second bill adds instruction to the state’s curriculum that would include lessons about Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong and Fidel Castro, as well as “poverty, starvation, migration, systemic lethal violence, and suppression of speech.”
Also in the second bill are new road designations that honor Cubans who fought against communism and the Castro regime.
Florida Lt. Gov. Jeannette Núñez praised DeSantis’s efforts to address “wokeism” in the classroom, and said the anti-communism lessons would teach children the importance of freedom and the tyranny of communism.
“Throughout this country, we are seeing communism and socialism being romanticized,” she said at a press conference. “Positive attitudes are at an all time high in this country. But not here in Florida, because freedom, not Marxism, has a home here in the free state of Florida.”
