The gentleman from South Carolina, Senator Lindsey Graham, is set to present a new bill on Tuesday that would ban abortion access nationwide, despite the overturning of Roe v. Wade galvanizing Democratic voters ahead of the mid-term elections.
In an e-mail sent out to reporters, Graham will be holding a press conference at the Capitol to announce the “Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act.”
Graham has previously proposed abortion bans starting at 20 weeks, but this bill is expected to propose a 15-week nationwide abortion ban. It is unclear if there will be any exceptions for victims of rape or incest or to save the mother’s life.
The bill is unlikely to succeed in the Senate, as minority leader Mitch McConnell has signaled he is unwilling to scrap the filibuster to pass any anti-abortion measures.
According to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll last month, 61% want Americans to have access to safe abortions. The poll also revealed that 65% of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.
