Liz Cheney was met with standing ovations Thursday at Mackinac Island’s Policy Conference in Michigan when speaking about the Republican Party and Donald Trump.
When asked by moderator Devin Scillian on Thursday if she would consider a third-party run for election, she said that she has not ruled it out. Cheney had said last September that she would not run as a Republican if a bid for the White House was in her future.
“The nation really needs to have parties that can have a substantive debate about policy,” Cheney said. “Right now we have one party that has embraced insurrection, one party that is … willingly trapped in a cult of personality. And that’s a really dangerous place for our country.”
Cheney has also said she would not support Ron DeSantis in 2024.
Though she remains staunchly conservative on most policy areas, in 2022 she campaigned in support of a Democrat for the first time ever by stumping for U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Lansing.
Last month, Cheney launched a new ad targeting Trump, narrating over clips of the January 6 insurrection.
“Donald Trump has proven he is unfit for office. Donald Trump is a risk America can never take again.”
