Domestic Disturbance Leads to Shots Fired at Church Pumpkin Patch in Nederland

DATELINE: NEDERLAND, TX — A domestic disturbance involving a gun outside a church in Nederland led to police taking a man to jail. Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter says the domestic dispute started Saturday night between the man and woman at the Nederland Apostolic Church in the 1300 block of S. 27th St.

He says they returned to the church on Sunday during a pumpkin patch event when the man pulled out a gun outside the church. Chief Porter said church members intervened and began to wrestle the gun from the man.

The chief says in the process of trying to get the firearm from him, the gun went off and hit what police believe was a glass saltshaker. Chief Porter says the glass from the saltshaker caused the woman to suffer minor injuries.

A man showed up to the pumpkin patch and pulled out a firearm.

A church member then attempted to restrain the man who had a gun according to Chief Porter. The gun discharged when the church member tried to hold the gun down to a picnic table.

The gun was fired three times. Nederland police believe one of the bullets hit a saltshaker. The glass exploded and hit a woman standing nearby. She has minor injuries from the glass.

Pastor Jackson of Nederland Apostolic Church said the pumpkin patch will remain closed Sunday temporarily and will resume regular hours at 4 p.m. Monday.
