Someone with access to the Michigan Republican Party’s X account had a message for Peter Meijer, a former Congressman who voted to impeach Trump, who entered a crowded GOP race for Michigan’s upcoming open Senate seat.
“Peter Meijer voted to impeach President Trump. Remember that,” the Michigan Republican Party’s official account on X posted at about 9:45 a.m. Monday.
Minutes later, the post was deleted, with a statement noting neutrality among the primary candidates.
Meijer, 35, will be competing for Debbie Stabenow’s open seat, challenging Mike Rogers and former Detroit police chief James Craig in the Republican primary. Elissa Slotkin and Hill Harper are running as Democrats, with heavy support leaning toward Slotkin, a current Congresswoman.
Meijer was one of 10 Republican House representatives who voted to impeach Donald Trump in 2021. He lost re-election when Trump-backed John Gibbs won the Republican primary, and Gibbs was later defeated by Democrat Hillary Scholten to flip a long-time Republican seat.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee was also unimpressed with Meijer’s announcement.
“Peter Meijer isn’t viable in a primary election, and there’s worry that if Meijer were nominated, the base would not be enthused in the general election,” NRSC Executive Director Jason Thielman said in a statement.
Meijer, the scion of the family who owns the eponymous Midwest grocery chain, has great personal wealth and allies who could fund a super PAC.
