Liveblog - Weekend Wrap Up: December 17, 2023

With so much going on in our world, we sometimes miss important issues. Please feel free to share any headlines or new developments we may have missed providing they come from reliable and credible sources.  In other words, please do not post any missed headlines form far right ‘news’ sources or regurgitate their Russian propaganda unless you’re trying to point out that the far-right extremist in our country and elsewhere actually believe their own BS or Russian disinformation.   The same applies to what is currently happening in Israel. We also ask that you provide a link to your source so folks can read it if they want. Please do not make any claims that you cannot factually validate or verify.

The Worst, Stupidest, and Most Deplorable People in the World:

Alex Jones offers Sandy Hook victims’ families $55 million to settle legal claims

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is asking the families of the victims in the Dec. 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. to accept a minimum settlement of $5.5 million a year for 10 years (or $55 million in total), with more possible depending on Jones’ income. The families who accept the deal would have to give up all legal claims against Jones or any related party.

The proposal falls far short of the close to $1.5 billion courts in Connecticut and Texas collectively awarded the victims’ relatives in lawsuits against Jones for falsely claiming the shooting — which left 26 people dead, the majority of them 6- and 7-year-old children — was a hoax.

Escaping to Substack Won’t Protect You From Spewing Racist and Defamatory Hate:

Over 100 Substack Writers Sign Letter Condemning Site For Hosting Nazi And White Supremacist Newsletters

Substack is facing a revolt from some of its writers after a report detailed how neo-Nazi and white supremacist writers—including the notorious alt-right leader Richard Spencer—have been able to make money charging for subscriptions through the site.

Substack’s terms of service say the platform cannot be used to “publish content or fund initiatives that incite violence based on protected classes,” which include threats against others based on race, gender, ethnicity, and religion.

However, a report in the Atlantic identified multiple Substack accounts affiliated with neo-Nazi and white supremacist leaders—including the Charlottesville Unite the Right Rally organizer Richard Spencer and former Identity Evropa leader Patrick Casey.
