This comes as voters will decide whether to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution
This morning, a six-week abortion ban officially took effect in Florida, replacing an existing 15-week abortion ban that had been in place in the state for several months. Today comes just one month after the Florida Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the Legislature’s ban, allowing it to move forward as scheduled. The near-total abortion ban will effectively cut off all access to reproductive care for Florida residents, along with residents of nearby states who rely on Florida clinics to receive abortion care.
However, despite today’s news, abortion will be on the ballot in November in Florida. The Florida Supreme Court ruled that Amendment 4, an initiative to enshrine the right to abortion access in the state’s constitution, will be on the ballot for Florida voters this November. Amendment 4 will need 60% of the vote to pass and will effectively overrule the current six-week ban.
