Where is reliable news? A few sources to save us from the Misinfo-Disinfo-Conspiracy-Pants – Fire Fake News. . .

From Harvard University, 2024: “Ad Fontes (founded. 2018)  has studied 3600 news sources, 700 podcasts and 474 TV/video programs, evaluating them on a two-point methodology.. In some circles, it’s simply referred to as “The Chart” — a mark of its reach and growing influence. The bias rating, on the horizontal axis, ranges from most extreme left to middle to most extreme right. The reliability rating, demonstrated on the chart’s vertical axis, rates sources on a scale from original fact reporting to analysis, opinion, propaganda and inaccurate/fabricated information.”

If you want to look up individual sources, media, bias, fact, check can be entered in the address line, and the particular publication can be put in the search line. You’ll get information about the reliability, accuracy, political leaning of the publication you’re inquiring about. (Media Bias Fact Check )

Example: I’ve searched FOX……

Fox News (foxnews.com) – Bias and Credibility

Fox News - Right Bias - Questionable Conservative - Republican - Not Credible or Reliable
Factual Reporting: Mixed - Not always Credible or Reliable

QUESTIONABLE SOURCE

A questionable source exhibits one or more of the following: extreme bias, consistent promotion of propaganda/conspiracies, poor or no sourcing to credible information, a complete lack of transparency, and/or is fake news. Fake News is the deliberate attempt to publish hoaxes and/or disinformation for profit or influence (Learn More). Sources listed in the Questionable Category may be very untrustworthy and should be fact-checked on a per-article basis. Please note sources on this list are not considered fake news unless specifically written in the reasoning section for that source.

Overall, we rate Fox News right biased based on editorial positions that align with the right and Questionable due to the promotion of propaganda, conspiracy theories, pseudoscience, the use of poor sources, and numerous false claims and failed fact checks. Straight news reporting from beat reporters is generally fact-based and accurate, which earns them a Mixed factual rating.

Key Point: Corporations may tell us what to think, how to act and what our roles in the culture should be. For instance, Comcast, AT&T, Disney, Paramount Global (formerly ViacomCBS), News Corp. (owner of Fox), and Sony control more than 90% of the Media in the US, according to Investopedia, 2023. In other words, CBS, CNN, CBS, FOX, Disney, TNT, TBS, Time Warner, Reuters, Viacom, AT&T, NBC, MSNBC, ABC, Netflix, and the giant Apple. Naturally there is more— Bezos owns the fading WaPo and the NYT OWNS the fading NYT. AND on and on, the news for clicks, the news for profit.

The good news? There are non-profits, a few are Pro- Publica, Mother Jones, Democracy Now, The Marshall Project is a non-profit news organization that focuses on criminal justice issues in the United States. The Texas Tribune is a non-profit news organization that covers politics, policy, and government in Texas. But they are funded too, by foundations, subscriptions, donations. The Guardian, BBC and NPR get public and government funding, also a dicey proposition, even if the government promises non-interference. Can there be a free press?
