Morning Joe hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski opened Monday’s show by jumping the shark — announcing they had visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend in order to “restart communications,” and begin a “new approach” to their MSNBC morning show coverage.
The pair were previously friends with TFG but were ostracized when criticizing Trump during his first term of office. It would mark the first time the duo had seen Trump in seven years.
Since the last time they met, the former president accused Scarborough of murdering a congressional staffer decades ago, a conspiracy theory he heard from his attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz, and the “Morning Joe” host claims that Trump allies had threatened to arrest his producers if he was re-elected.
Mika said that Joe had called TFG following the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, reporting that Trump was upbeat and interested in finding common ground with Democrats during the Mar-a-Lago meeting.
Joe reported that “top Democrats” he’s talked to say they’re open to a new approach to dealing with TFG, and open to working with TFG if he is open to working across the aisle.
“Don’t be mistaken,” Scarborough concluded, “We are not here to defend or normalize Donald Trump. We are here to report on him and to hopefully provide you insights that are going to better equip all of us in understanding these deeply unsettling times.”
