Justin Trudeau Goes to Mar-a-Lago

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau landed in Florida Friday night to visit Trump at Mar-a-Lago, after Trump threatened to slap 25% tariffs on Canadian goods.

One official with knowledge said Trudeau would not be staying overnight at Mar-a-Lago, but would stay in the area.

Trump has said he would sign an order to impose tariffs on his first day unless Canada and Mexico take action to curb the arrival of undocumented migrants and drugs into the U.S., a move that could cripple trade among the North American countries, but is also seen as an opening to renegotiate the trade agreement known as the USMCA.

Trudeau and other Canadian officials have sought to differentiate Canada’s position from Mexico’s, noting that Canada is better aligned with the Trump agenda on three key issues: the borders, restrictions on China and bringing well-paying jobs back home.

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, threatened retaliatory tariffs if Trump followed through on his threats.

The visit to MAL was first documented on the basis of tracking Trudeau’s plane.
