First Female and Italian-American Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, Announces She Will Retire

The first female and Italian-American Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, announced in a video message to her constituents in the City by the Bay, she will not seek re-election in 2026. She will finish out her current term but will retire when the new Congress is sworn in in 2027.

Speaker Emerita Pelosi led her party in the House for two decades — from 2002 to 2022 — serving as a crucial ally for Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and orchestrating the opposition to Republican Presidents George W.
