House Panel Votes to Advance Shutdown Bill, Despite Sneaky Senator Provision Allowing Some to Sue the Government

Overnight the House Rules Committee debated whether to advance the government shutdown funding measure that passed the Senate on Monday. This would be the first step taken by the House to reopen the government.

Despite a debate about a provision in the funding measure that would allow several Republican Senators to sue the government for $500,000 if their phone data was sought or obtained by Jack Smith’s investigations into the Capitol attack without them being notified, the House passed the measure in an 8-4 vote.

Texas Rep. Chip Roy and Georgia Rep. Austin Scott (Republicans) opposed the provision that would affect eight Republican Senators, including:

  • Lindsey Graham
  • Bill Hagerty
  • Josh Hawley
  • Dan Sullivan
  • Tommy Tuberville
  • Ron Johnson
  • Cynthia Lummis
  • Marsha Blackburn

Of course what wasn’t provided in the measure is an extension of the ACA subsidies. Hakeem Jeffries and Kathleen Clark proposed an amendment that would extend the subsidies for three years, but the amendment was turned down.
