Brown University Says FBI’s Person of Interest Released in Mass Shooting Investigation

Providence police authorities announced on Sunday evening that a person-of-interest in the Brown University mass shooting would be released.

“We have a murderer out there, frankly,” said Attorney General Peter Neronha.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged that the announcement would likely cause fresh anxiety in the community, and encouraged anyone with information on the shooting to come forward.

Smiley said that all video from inside the building had been examined, and that there was no additional “actionable” video. AG Neronha added that the building where the shooting occurred was old, and without many cameras.

Patel had posted about tracking the person of interest down, claiming on X that the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team had used “critical geolocation capabilities” to detain the man in a hotel room in Coventry.
