Below, you will find some headlines and events we may have missed. Feel free to share what you have found interesting as long as it comes from a credible source, not some RW cesspit.

Washington Post lays off one-third of its newsroom

Sports coverage, international, metro and the paper’s podcast are among those hit the hardest as the storied newspaper cuts back amid declining revenue.

The Washington Post announced sweeping layoffs Wednesday, with cuts expected to greatly reduce some coverage areas at the storied 150-year-old newspaper.

The wide-ranging job losses primarily affected the sports, books and podcast units, according to a source familiar with the situation. Foreign desks were also heavily impacted, along with cuts to business and national teams.

Roughly one-third of the company was affected by the layoffs, a Washington Post spokesperson said.

A publisher who lays off a reporter whose pen is freezing because she's covering a frigid war zone while dodging missiles is not an editor you want to work for, in a more perfect world

Power to the People!:

The Supreme Court lets California use its new, Democratic-friendly congressional map

The Supreme Court is allowing California to use its new congressional map for this year’s midterm election, clearing the way for the state’s gerrymandered districts as Democrats and Republicans continue their fight for control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The state’s voters approved the redistricting plan last year as a Democratic counterresponse to Texas’ new GOP-friendly map, which President Trump pushed for to help Republicans hold on to their narrow majority in the House.

And in a brief, unsigned order released Wednesday, the high court denied an emergency request by the California’s Republican Party to block the redistricting plan. The state’s GOP argued that the map violated the U.S. Constitution because its creation was mainly driven by race, not partisan politics. A lower federal court rejected that claim.

Across the country, Americans are saying no to ICE prisons in their communities

On Jan. 21, the Department of Homeland Security wrote a letter to officials in Hanover County, Virginia, informing them that the government would be building an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in the town of Ashland.

For context, Hanover is a reliably red county just outside Richmond. Donald Trump beat Kamala Harris by 26 points there in 2024.

Specifically, the government told the Hanover officials that it wanted to build out the facility on a former cattle farm, where there is now a 500,000-square-foot warehouse constructed by a company owned by Canadian billionaire Jim Pattison.

‘This Job Sucks!’ Trump DOJ Lawyer Melts Down in Court — Reportedly Begs Minneapolis Judge to Throw Her in Jail Just So She Can Get Some Sleep

A Justice Department lawyer seemed fed up with her line of work when she had meltdown during a court hearing about ICE’s conduct.

On Tuesday, DOJ attorney Julie Le took part in a federal hearing about ICE’s immigration enforcement in Minnesota. At one point during the session, Judge Jerry Blackwell pressed Le on the agency repeatedly ignoring court orders. In response, Le appeared to have a sudden stream of consciousness — according to an account from local Fox 9 reporter Paul Blume, who detailed the bizarre moment:

“SHOCKING FEDERAL COURT MOMENT: DOJ attorney Julie Le, ‘The system sucks, this job sucks’ to Judge Jerry Blackwell who pressed her on why so many court orders are being ignored by ICE/Trump admin. She asked to be held in contempt just so she could get 24 hours of sleep.”
