In a Truth Social post on Sunday morning, Trump vowed to block all legislation until the SAVE Act passes the Senate.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has committed repeatedly to maintaining a 60-vote threshold, and says he does not have a 50 vote majority on changing the procedure to pass the SAVE Act through a talking filibuster rule.
Changing the procedure would allow the Senate to pass the bill with 51 votes, and the House has had ample support to pass the bill.

Voter ID bills have bipartisan support, but Democrats know the SAVE Act has ID requirements that would be restrictive and challenging, likely suppressing voting for many currently registered.

Why the SAVE America Act is trash… It would disenfranchise millions of eligible U.S. citizens (estimates: 21+ million lack easy access to required docs like passports or birth certificates; impacts active voters, women with name changes after marriage, young people, low-income, rural, older, naturalized citizens, voters of color, military families). It solves a non-problem — noncitizen voting in federal elections is already illegal and extremely rare (near-zero cases per studies; no evidence it affects outcomes). It would end or severely limit convenient registration methods (online/mail), forcing in-person proof of citizenship and adding huge burdens on election officials (higher costs, redesigns, errors, purges, data sharing with DHS). Seen as voter suppression disguised as security, disproportionately harming certain groups while based on debunked fraud claims.
