Old Dominion University Virginia, Act of Terrorism
A gunman opened fire inside a classroom of ROTC students at Old Dominion University in Virginia, fatally shooting one person and injuring two others before a student stabbed him.
The 36-year-old suspect, Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, is a former Army National Guard member who served nearly seven years in prison after pleading guilty to trying to aid the Islamic militant group ISIS.
FBI Director Kash Patel says the FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.
The attack came during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan – a time of fasting and spiritual renewal for most Muslims. But Jalloh has previously commented that he believed Ramadan would be the ideal time to carry out an attack, according to court records.
Bloomfield Hills Michigan Synagogue
The man who rammed a truck into the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township and started shooting appears to have acted alone, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said Thursday evening.
A security guard engaged the suspect who went through the front door of the synagogue which also includes an early childhood learning center. Authorities found what appeared to be a large amount of explosives in the back of the vehicle, and the suspect was found dead.
All 140 students and staff of the synagogue were safe, while eight first responders were treated for injuries at a hospital. The security guard who killed the suspect was apparently struck by the vehicle but is expected to be okay.
ICE Barbie said federal officials were closely monitoring the situation.
Police had been actively searching for a possible second suspect, scouring a nearby golf course, and waiting for access to a video of the incident that occurred just before 1pm.
“As you have no doubt heard, Temple Israel was the victim of a terrorist gunman who was confronted and neutralized by our security personnel who are truly heroes,” temple leaders said in a statement.
