Tyler Robinson, 22, is set to be indicted on aggravated murder and obstruction of justice, and other charges in court today for the killing of Charlie Kirk.
Prosecutors say they are seeking the death penalty.
“When asked why he did it, Robinson explained there is too much evil in the guy, referring to Charlie Kirk,” said Jeff Gray, the chief Utah County prosecutor.
And in a text chat with his roommate, Robinson allegedly said he had to kill Kirk when the opportunity presented itself.
“I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out,” Robinson told his roommate, according to Gray. “If I am able to grab my rifle unseen, I will have left no evidence.”
Robinson used his grandfather’s bolt action rifle.
His mother told investigators that Tyler had become more political in recent months, becoming more pro-gay and trans-rights oriented.
Robinson’s roommate, who went unidentified, told prosecutors that Tyler sent a text message to look under his keyboard where he had left a note stating: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
Friends of Robinson on Discord claim the group is apolitical.

Private Discord messages shared with me by a friend of Robinson’s confirm that Robinson wasn’t some political martyr. A search for posts of Robinson’s containing keywords like “Biden” and “Trump” turned up just one hit each. The Trump post was a passing reference to the 2019 impeachment inquiry. The Biden one came on the day of the 2020 election, where he provided an update to another friend asking about the status of the vote count.
According to his family and now the FBI, Tyler subscribed to left-wing ideology, but his friends say his family didn’t know a lot about his ideology or his relationship with Lance, a transgender friend.
Tyler’s bisexuality, the friend said, was coupled with openness on LGBT issues. But his wasn’t some cookie cutter lefty position on every or even most issues, his friends say.
“Obviously he’s okay with gay and trans people having a right to exist, but also believes in the Second Amendment,” the friend said, referring to the right to bear arms.
