FDA Quietly Approved New Generic Abortion Pill Before the Republican and Trump Led Government Shutdown

The approval of a generic for the medication mifepristone comes less than two weeks after Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pledged that the agency would review the drug’s safety.

Just a day before the federal government shuttered, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) quietly approved a generic form of mifepristone, one of the two medications used in most U.S. abortions.

The FDA sent a letter to Evita Solutions informing them that the agency approved their generic form of mifepristone.

“Availability of our product will expand patients’ options for medication abortion with an affordable product backed by decades of safe use. The new product is expected to be available in January 2026,” the company said in a statement.

The FDA approval comes less than two weeks after Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Republican state attorneys general in a letter that the FDA would review mifepristone’s safety.

In the letter, Kennedy and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary wrote that the FDA’s past decisions to roll back certain restrictions on mifepristone access had not been given “adequate consideration” at the time.
