The Washington Post published a report that claims Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service has proposed staging a fake assassination attempt on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in order to boost support for his re-election.
Russia’s intelligence agency known as SVR had raised alarm over falling public support for Orban ahead of the election in April.
The Post referred to a European intelligence source.
The Russian report said it is necessary to implement a strategy capable of “fundamentally alter the entire paradigm of the election campaign” by organizing an “assassination attempt” on Orban.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed the information about the report is “disinformation.”
Trump sent out a campaign video endorsing Orban, saying that they share in common so much winning despite so many attacks against them.
In recent weeks, Orban and his party have tried to shift public attention away from economic problems to focus on external security threats, blaming Ukraine for Russian oil pipeline disruptions and alleged threats from Kyiv.
On March 19, Hungary banned three Ukrainians from the country for allegedly making threats against Orban.
Journalists in Europe also established that Hungary was preparing to intercept assets belonging to Ukraine in order to provoke a confrontation with Ukraine ahead of the election.
The same journalists reported that the Kremlin was sending a team of disinformation specialists to the Russian embassy in Budapest to support Orban.
