How Low Can He Go?

WATCH — @crampell.bsky.social : “Just 29% of Americans approve of Trump's handling of the economy, lower than Biden ever got. His response? Slapping his face on a gold coin and his signature on your cash… while investors are already betting on 5% inflation this year.”

Supreme Court rules against Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy aimed at LGBTQ youth

Kaley Chiles, a Christian talk therapist in Colorado, argued that the state ban violated her First Amendment rights.

WASHINGTON — In a blow to LGBTQ rights, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy aimed at youths struggling with their sexual orientation or gender identity violates the free speech rights of a conservative Christian therapist.

The 8-1 decision in favor of therapist Kaley Chiles on her claim brought under the Constitution’s First Amendment is likely to have national implications — more than 20 states have similar laws. It could also have an impact on other forms of medical treatment that involve speech.

The Worst People in the World:

Members of Jan. 6 mob sue police who fended off Capitol attack

Jan. 6 defendants are hopeful that the administration will look favorably on their claims.

Members of the mob that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 are suing the federal government for tens of millions of dollars in damages, claiming that the “indiscriminate” use of force by police officers repelling the attack caused them physical and emotional injuries.

The lawsuit, filed in Florida, takes aim at the conduct of Capitol Police and Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, whose outnumbered officers fended off the mob for hours while members of Congress fled.

From the MarKODA Files: Trump officials cite white supremacists in bid to end birthright citizenship

Alexander Porter Morse, a Confederate officer during the Civil War and a Louisiana attorney, argued for legalized segregation in the landmark 1896 Supreme Court case that established the “separate but equal” doctrine and buttressed Jim Crow laws.

He is again playing a key role in a monumental case to be argued before the justices Wednesday: The Trump administration has tapped Morse as an authority in its push to upend long-settled law that virtually everyone born in the United States is a citizen.

Trump administration attorneys cite Morse in their Supreme Court brief to argue the disputed idea that commentators in the 19th century widely agreed that the Constitution “exclude[s] the children of foreigners transiently within the United States” from qualifying for citizenship.

In addition to opposing birthright citizenship, Morse also advocated for limiting the other reconstruction amendments that abolished slavery and guaranteed Black people the right to vote.
