Pilot reports possible drone strike on United jet in California airspace

A United Airlines flight on approach to San Diego International Airport may have struck a drone at around 3,000 feet on Wednesday.

The pilot of United flight 1980, which departed San Francisco International Airport just before 7 a.m., reported to the tower that the Boeing 737 “hit a drone,” KTLA’s sister station KSWB reported.

In an audio recording from the cockpit, the pilot is heard describing the object to the controller as small and red.

“I believe I just saw like a red small object, about 1,000 feet below us to our right,” the pilot said.
